Have you ever wondered what Aromatherapy is?

Have you ever wondered what Aromatherapy is? Aromatherapy can be considered an alternative medicine. This alternative medicine, essential oils, can and is used in a positive way in an individuals bodily and mental health.

Did you know that the human sense of smell is ten thousand times more powerful than our other senses? This means that when you inhale an essential oil for, let's say, brain health, it instantly goes to the brain instead of having to break down like a pill.
When an essential oil is sent to the brain, it directly goes to the olfactory nerve cells inside the nasal passage and into the larger olfactory system. The olfactory bulb them delivers that essential oil to the brains limbic system. The limbic system works as a 'seat' of emotions and the originator of our emotional behavior on a daily basis.

Our limbic system is something to marvel. Regardless of which essential oils you inhale, you may feel a rapid release of mental strain or negative emotions. These essential oils will also release muscle tension at the same time. I did not know this, but the pituitary gland and hypothalamus is connected to the limbic system. This means our hormones are being affected by the essential oils we use daily. These essential oils affect our nervous system, appetite, body temperature, concentration and stress levels.

The essential oil I use everyday is Frankincense. Frankincense has been used for centuries, going back to the bible. In fact, Frankincense is called "The King of Oils". Frankincense has it's origins in Europe, India and North Africa. Frankincense is the oil I use for anti-inflammatory issues and as in antioxidant, antiseptic and much more. Frankincense can be used internally and externally. In fact, this is how I use it.

I either take two drops under my tongue, add two drops to veggie caps or add 10-12 drops to a rollerball bottle with other oils I use to make my own blend for auto immune issues.

In conclusion, aromatherapy is something to take seriously as we all know how certain scents work in our body and how these scents can lift of up, bring back memories and work in our body and mind is ways we had never thought about for our health.

Staying Hydrated Begins with Drinking Water

Hello my friends!

As we head on into the month of May, let's think about something that is probably not on our minds as often as it should be. This would be hydrating our bodies with water.
Yes, water in one of the most important liquids for keeping us healthy on a daily basis. At one time, I thought drinking coffee, which is made with water, would be enough for me to stay hydrated.

Well guess what, I was wrong. Even though coffee is made with water, the water does become diluted and water is no longer going to be useful to keep us hydrated. Oh, don't get me wrong, I love coffee and drink at least two BIG cups a day, then I reheat it several times throughout the day, which I know is not a good for me.

In fact, I have actually made a promise to myself that I would stop drinking coffee once all the coffee bags I have in my home and office are all gone.

As much fun as it is to drink coffee and be seen drinking coffee, it is not good for my health, but far be in from me to waste something I have already purchased. So, I will drink all the coffee I have purchased and then purchase no more. My girls do not like coffee, but they love this vanilla blend at a big name coffee house. So, if you see me going into one, it is for my girls. If anything,  I will get a smoothie as a substitute for coffee.

Alright, back to water and the importance of drinking it daily. The human body thrives off water. Our bodies are made up of 50% to 75% water. This is a lot of water that our bodies, and minds, rely on to keep us running. Look at it this way, in order for our vehicles to work, or stay in motion, they require gasoline at least 3 times a week depending on how you drive.  Same goes for our bodies, the ultimate machine, that requires optimum maintenance.

One thing many of us might not consider, on a daily basis, is fatigue or being tired. If by chance these are symptoms you feel, you can bet it is a lack of water causing such symptoms. Honestly, who would have thought that a lack of drinking water would cause such symptoms throughout the day.

It is amazing how important drinking water everyday is. Without water, our enzymes are not able to produce energy. This would be energy everybody needs to help them wake up, get out of bed, eat a breakfast and get out the door. From the poll I posted titled, "How Many Glasses of Water Do You Drink in a Week?", it looks like drinking water is not a high priority.
How many glasses of water do you drink in a week?

Isn't it interesting how water is taken for granted? Water is a very important fuel we need to stay active and our bodies staying in working order. Indeed, water is the most amazing, and easy way, to remove waste that is causing our bodies to become 'backed up' or constipated, if you will.

Can you image all the toxins that are built up in our bodies for simply not drinking water? Have you ever heard of the 8x8 rule? Yeah, neither have I until this weekend. The 8x8 rule is when you consume 8 glasses of 8 ounces of fresh, pure water, per day.

Although this sounds like a lot of water, just think how your body and mind will feel when they are relieved of the toxins that are building up causing tiredness, pain and unnecessary sickness.

Speaking of fresh, pure water, if at all possible, it is best to drink water that has been filtered and not sitting in a plastic bottle. Plastic bottles contain a chemical called  BPA. This chemical has been in use for over 40 years now if you can imagine. I do not know about you, but I just learned about BPA in the last 8 years. So, I have become leery of purchasing anything in a plastic bottle or container.

Let me digress here, back in college, in the 1990s, I drank water all the time. In fact, I would keep my plastic water bottle, sitting in my car, in the hot sun for who knows how long. Remember, I did not learn about BPA until about 8 years ago, so for all those days at school, while I kept one of my many water bottles sitting in the sun, BPA was seeping into my water even more that it already had been from the water being filled into these water bottles.

There are plastic water bottles on the market that do say they are BPA free. If you see these, like the one I am using in my photo to the right, I would buy one, but please, do not leave it in anywhere in or near the sun, BPA free or not. Now, the best way to drink water would be in a glass cup or glass bottle.

Last month, I purchased three glass bottles for myself and my two girls. These glass water bottles are wrapped in a rubber on the outside so they will not shatter if or when they are dropped. Glass, is my far, the best way to go when drinking anything, especially water.

Water is an excellent way to detox your body. The thing I like to do is add, or diffuse, lemon, lime, ginger and even kiwi or strawberries, in my water. Sadly, this diffuser in my glass water bottle, is plastic, I was not able to find a glass bottle with a glass diffuser. So, as much as I wanted to use all glass, it was not possible. Anyway, with this diffuser, I add my fruit, shake up the water bottle and eventually my water has a hint of fruit flavor.

Now, adding fruit to my water is nothing new to me. While pregnant, I added lemon and lime to my water because as much as I love water, and drink it everyday, drinking water with some natural fruit flavors, is much better.

Last, but not least, drinking water is vital for our daily living friends. Please do not let the fact that water might be 'boring' stop you anymore. Now, you can add hints of real fruit flavor to your water and do all you can to drink water doing the 8x8 rule to stay hydrated and quite possibly, reverse illness.

Aside from using real fruit, I also add various essential oils like Peppermint, Clove, Lavender and On Guard to my water

The Issue With Gluten is this...

Hello again friends!

Before 2012, I had not really heard about gluten, what it was or that it was even in food products. Did you know that gluten is naturally grown in such foods as wheat, barley and rye? If one is not prone to reading food product ingredients, like I was not before 2006, it is highly likely one is not going to know gluten is a main ingredient in many of the foods being sold in grocery stores today.

These are just some of the many foods you might be eating today and would never have known gluten is in them that are causing harm to your gut.

  • Wheat Bran
  • Cracked Wheat
  • Graham Flour
  • Matzo
  • Spelt
  • Soups
  • Cold Cuts
  •  Processed Cheese
  • Salad Dressings
  • Wheatgrass
  • Wine Coolers
  • Syrups

There are many other food products that contain gluten in them that one would never even think gluten was an ingredient. Look friends, our health is all we have. It is time for us to take charge of our own health by going to a health coach, nutritionist or your doctor.

For the most part, people will never hear about gluten or the health issues it causes in the body until a friend brings it up in a conversation and how gluten is causing such health issues as "brain fog". Yes, there is actually a symptom called brain fog and believe me, I have had brain fog when I have eaten gluten in food product I could have sworn was gluten free.
Now, with brain fog, one is sure to feel  such things a memory loss, confusion and attention problems. When such things occur in an individual, usually they will laugh it off and move on to a different topic. Brain fog might also be due to a lack of sleep and even seasonal allergies.

There is an illness that people with gluten intolerance deal with called Celiac disease. Sadly, these individuals feel such symptoms as chronic intolerance, stomach pain, diarrhea, bloating and much more.

When the body hurts, the first thing a person will do is either ignore it, or look for the what is causing them to feel out of sorts. Did you know that gluten intolerance also causes depression? Yes, this is true and can now be dealt with by changing the current diet like removing all carbs, which will include gluten, all the above food products and using essential oils  recommended by Dr. David Hill like Bergamot oil, Lavender oil, Roman Chamomile oil and Ylang Ylang oil.

Now, all the above is great information for those seeking answers to what is ailing them, but I am not going to leave you hanging without some sort of foods you can eat for lunches, dinners or snacks if you work outside the home. This is a very big life changing event, realizing your body is sensitive to gluten products. Being able to find gluten free products has become easier these days with more and more people becoming aware of this health issue in their body.

In fact, many more grocery stores have a Gluten Free section. This is one company I purchase gluten free products from all the time when I am in the grocery store. I will eat them for lunch time at work. There are, of course, other gluten free companies you will find in a grocery store near you. Although, I do not recommend eating these foods all the time.

It is best, again, to take baby steps when changing a diet, like going gluten free. The first thing to do is clean out your food pantry and refrigerator. Then, replace those unkind foods for your body and brain, with organic fruits and vegetables. If at all possible, purchase all your gluten free food products along the walls of the grocery store.

Have a blessed day!

Staying Healthy Begins With You

Hello friends!

Thank you for finding my blog, Naturally Keeping You Healthy.  My goal in creating this blog is to share with you what I am doing to stay healthy whether I eat in or eat out. Not only do I want to share how I am staying healthy, I want to help you reach your goals of naturally keeping you healthy.

These days, with all the fast food restaurants found in the city you live in, it is easy to come home from work and have no energy to make a home cooked meal. Look, I get it, after coming home from a long day at work, or not, the last thing an individual or family want to do is create a home cooked meal that might take 10-15 minutes for prep and 30 minutes to an hour to make.

So, on the off-chance making a home cooked meal seven days a week does not work out for you, let me suggest ways to eat on the healthier side when eating out. Eating out might be at a fast food or nice sit down restaurant. For the most part, when deciding on where to eat, I am guessing you already know what type of foods, i.e. nationality, beef, vegetables or desserts, will be served.

With this out of the way, when looking to take charge of your health, even though it is tempting, not say no to these foods down the road, that will cause more harm than good to your overall being. Temptations are all around us, believe me, it is not easy to find good foods to eat, especially foods with carbs like bread, chips and pasta. These types of foods are, in a way, comfort foods, and are easy to sink your teeth into and fill your stomach and soul with.

As easy as this is to do while eating out, when offered side dishes, or appetizers, ask for fruit or a small salad with a dressing that does not have fillers. Yes, it is true, salad dressing are made with fillers such as Canola Oil and/or Soybean Oil, Xanthan Gum or Food Starch, MSG, Fat-free, Polysorbate 60, Natural & Artificial Favors and the list goes on.

Just when you think you are eating healthy, it is time to think twice before ever ordering that salad dressing you grew up loving and pouring over your salad. That once delicious salad dressing  just might contain the above ingredients which will only slow down your desire to live a healthier life.

If your favorite salad dressing contains this many unhealthy ingredients, just think about what the main meal might include in it. True, there are a lot of sit down chain restaurants today that have a "healthy choices" section, but just how healthy are these choices? Even if you ask the waiter, it is highly unlikely they really know what all the ingredients are in the meal you want to purchase.

Oh my, on your way to eating healthier certainly sounds complicated...but it does not have to be. If you are still thinking about eating out at a sit down restaurant or go through a drive thru, if you do not see a more healthier dish and you know it would be wrong to make that purchase, it is time to leave said restaurant, go to your local grocery store and taking baby steps, purchase vegetables you already like, a beef product you like, hopefully organic, take home and make that home cooked meal.

Time and money will always play a role in what you want to eat everyday. Making a meal, at home, in under an hour is attainable and eating under $20 at home using foods you actually choose at your local farmer's market or grocery store, even makes the meal more real to you as there is no one standing behind a counter slapping a 'meal' together with gosh only knows what ingredients that were not meant for human consumption.

Indeed, now is time to think before we eat out because our health depends on it as time presses on.

Have a blessed day!

Monica
